October Spooktacular Events!

The days are getting shorter, the nights crisper, and the words “pumpkin spice” seem to be on everything from lattes to candy.  It must be October and time for Halloween fun.  

Here are some family activities that will be fun for big boos and little boos alike!

Petersen Family Farm: hosts an annual Harvest Festival every year with activities, food trucks, music, food, and of course pumpkins.  Admission is free, though there is a charge for some of the activities.  The fun starts October 7th from 10 am - 3 pm. 11887 S. 4000 W., Riverton

Crazy Corn Maze:  Located at 8800 S 4000 W in West Jordan is celebrating 19 years and has a haunted trail and pumpkin patch as well as the maze.  Runs through Nov 4th.

Witch Fest: Gardner Village (1100 W 7800 S in West Jordan) is a Halloween tradition for many and runs through October 31st.  Scavenger hunts, mazes, shopping and food are just some of the fun events happening!

Odyssy Dance Theatre: Another popular tradition is Odyssy Dance Theatre’s performance of Thriller!  Come watch funny and impressive dances featuring Jason from Friday the 13th, Mr. & Mrs. Frankenstein, and of course Thriller.   This performance is not recommended for children under 8 and runs at Kingsbury Hall October 6th-30th

Red Butte Gardens: Gardens After Dark runs Thursday, Friday, & Saturday October 19-21 & 26-28 from 6-9 pm and includes food, activity stations, performers, and merchandise.

Oktoberfest: Oktoberfest at Snowbird has been going strong since 1973!  But what's not to love?  Food, activities, and of course beer for those who enjoy a good ale.  This is family friendly, so whether or not you drink alcohol, Oktoberfest is a great way to get your German on.  Saturdays and Sundays through October 15th.

Cross E Ranch: Cross E Ranch's Fall Festival goes through October 30th and includes activities such as movies in the barn, hay rides, a 14 acre corn maze, pumpkin patch, hay slides, and more.  See their website for schedules and pricing (don't miss the $1 discount sign up on the home page).

The Haunted Woods: Murray Park's Haunted Woods is a fun, family friendly activity that has been happening for 40 years.  This year proceeds benefit the fight against child abuse in Utah.  Choose from the spooky trail or the silly trail to make sure even your littles have a good time.  $5 entry includes hot chocolate and a doughnut, who could ask for more?  October 23,24, & 25 6:30-8:00 at Murray Park between the park office & swimming pool.

Hogle Zoo: BooLights at Utah's Hogle Zoo is new this year and runs October 6&7, 13 & 14, 18-21, and 27th from 6:30-9:30.  Buy any size Papa Murphy's pizza to receive a free child's ticket with the purchase of an adult ticket (see website for details).

The Leonardo: The Leonardo has 2 frighteningly fun events this Halloween season.  Spooky Science (through November 5th) walks you through the science of all things scary and Spooktacular (October 19-22) includes plenty of DIY workshops and is included in your general admission (see website for details).

Day of the Dead: The Utah Cultural Celebration Center is hosting this cultural celebration that includes music, dancing, activites, traditional food, and more. Don't miss this "dead man's party" October 28th 11 am-6 pm at 1355 W 3100 S in West Valley.

Wheeler Farm: Wheeler Farm has many activities to choose from; from mazes and wagon rides to scarecrow contests and days for your favorite canine to explore this historic farm.  Don't miss out on the fun.  Activieis run through October 31st, see website for details.

This is the Place: Little Haunts is the perfect place to take your littles for a fun, non-scary Halloween event.  October 14, 19-21, and 28 from 10 - 5 you can enjoy trick or treating, pony rides, and even a story telling witch!  And don't forget to enter the coloring contest!

The Haunted Aquarium: The Living Planet Aquarium is getting into the Halloween fun with the Haunted Aquarium.  October 13-31 you can watch skeleton dives, have Pirate story time and even join the costume contest and trick or treating!  See website for details and schedule of events.

Thanksgiving Point: The annual Scarecrow Festival at Thanksgiving Point runs October 16-21 from 10-6 with a festival market including vendors, food, activities, & entertainment on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday.  Walk through the gardens and check out the scarecrows, or help make one yourself (see website for details) and enjoy the sights and sounds of fall.

The Haunted Half: This fun annual event will get your spirits up and your heart pumping.  With races in Salt Lake (October 14th) and Provo (October 28th) you can choose from a half marathon, 5K, or kids run.  Costumes are encouraged and candy will help replace the calories burned during the race. = )

Undead Race: If you are one who needs a little inspiration to get your run on, this race is for you!  Dawn, Day, or Night of the Running Dead are "5K-ish" races where you register as either a zombie or a human (humans get a 2 minute head start).  October 21st at 9 AM, 1 PM, or 8 PM is the day to run for your life!  This event is family friendly.  As my mamma always said, a family who runs in terror together, stays together.
